Netflix is officially expanding the world of Extraction with Mercenary: An Extraction Series, a new eight episode action thriller starring Omar Sy. The series is currently in production after wrapping filming in Ireland and resuming work in Morocco.
Netflix shared the behind the scenes look this week, confirming the show is part of the growing Extraction universe and will stream exclusively on Netflix. A premiere date and release time have not yet been announced.
Set within the same high risk world as the hit films, the series follows a mercenary sent on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. The story places the character between warring factions and violent threats, forcing him to make life or death choices while dealing with past trauma and personal consequences. The setup keeps the focus on survival, trust, and moral pressure rather than spectacle alone.
The series is led by showrunner and writer Glen Mazzara, known for his work on The Shield and The Walking Dead. Direction is split across the season, with Louise Hooper directing four episodes and Tim Southam handling the remaining four. Both also serve as executive producers on their episodes.

Behind the camera, the franchise remains in familiar hands. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo return as executive producers through AGBO, alongside longtime collaborators including Sam Hargrave and Chris Castaldi. Their involvement signals continuity with the tone and style fans associate with the films.
The cast includes Boyd Holbrook (The Sandman), Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Sacha Dhawan (The Great), Waleed Zuaiter Gangs of London), Ed Speleers (Star Trek: Picard), May Calam (Moon Knight), and Ross McCall (Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning).
Mercenary arrives as Netflix continues to build out the Extraction brand following two highly viewed films and a newly announced spinoff set in South Korea. For fans of grounded action with global stakes, this series marks the franchise’s next major step.
