One of my favorite moments in Star Trek: The Original Series comes from Season 1’s “Balance of Terror,” and it lasts only a few seconds.

In the middle of a tense standoff with a cloaked Romulan ship, Captain Kirk calmly orders Uhura to take the helm. There is no hesitation, no commentary, and no reaction shot calling attention to the choice. She simply does it, because she is an officer doing her job. The episode moves on as if this were the most natural thing in the world.

That quiet confidence is what makes the moment land. In an era when television rarely trusted women of color with authority, Star Trek did not announce its progressiveness. It demonstrated it. The scene works because it is not framed as a statement. It is framed as normal. Decades later, it still feels ahead of its time, and it remains one of the reasons “Balance of Terror” continues to be one of my favorite episodes to watch.

Did You Know?

Submarine Influence: “Balance of Terror” draws heavily from the 1957 submarine film The Enemy Below, translating Cold War naval tactics into deep space.

A Familiar Face: This episode marks the first appearance of Mark Lenard in the Star Trek franchise. He later returned as Spock’s father, Sarek.

Firsts for the Franchise: The episode introduced the Romulan species and their cloaking device, both of which became lasting elements of the Star Trek universe.
