Retirement usually brings to mind images of golf, gardening, and maybe a few too many afternoons spent with the grandkids. But for the folks in The Boroughs, those golden years are about to take a sharp left turn.
The Duffer Brothers' new supernatural thriller lands on Netflix on May 21, 2026, and suddenly, a group of neighbors finds themselves in the middle of a sci-fi mystery. Let's get to know the cast, starting with Sam Cooper, played by Alfred Molina.
After his wife passes away, Sam moves to The Boroughs, a beautiful retirement community that promises fun and relaxation. His neighbors call it paradise, but for Sam, this sunny and carefully kept cul-de-sac in the New Mexico desert feels more like a prison. Everything changes when a terrifying nighttime encounter reveals that something monstrous.

The people in charge write Sam off as just another retiree with an overactive imagination, but he's not alone for long. He teams up with a group of neighbors who don't quite fit the mold: a quick-thinking journalist, a spiritual soul, a music manager with a sharp tongue, and a doctor who's seen it all. Together, they set out to uncover what's really going on in The Boroughs before it's too late.

Sam Cooper, played by Alfred Molina, is a retired engineer who comes off as a bit gruff, but there's a lot more going on beneath the surface. He's still grieving his wife, and he's got a mind that doesn't miss much.
Then there's Renee Joyce, played by Geena Davis. She's a former music manager with a love for rock and roll and a stubborn streak that won't let her sit quietly on the sidelines. She's ready to take on whatever weirdness comes their way.
Judy Daniels, played by Alfre Woodard, is a former journalist who's got a nose for trouble and a knack for digging up secrets. She teams up with Wally Baker, played by Denis O'Hare, a retired doctor who cracks jokes when things get tense.
Art Daniels, played by Clarke Peters, is the group's spiritual center, always ready with a thoughtful word or a bit of wisdom. He's often hanging out with Jack Willard, played by Bill Pullman, who's the kind of neighbor who makes everyone feel welcome.
Rounding out the crew is Paz Navarro, played by Carlos Miranda, a security guard who's starting to think his job might be a lot more complicated than he signed up for.

Blaine Shaw, played by Seth Numrich, is the public face of The Boroughs, always smiling for the neighbors, even if that smile doesn't quite reach his eyes. His partner, Anneliese Shaw (Alice Kremelberg), keeps things running smoothly with a quiet intensity that makes people think twice before crossing her. And then there's Hank Williams, played by Eric Edelstein, the head of security who's not afraid to lay down the law.
On the family front, there's Claire Cooper, played by Jena Malone. She's Sam's daughter, and all she wants is for her dad to be safe. Her husband Neil, played by Rafael Casal, is the eternal optimist, doing his best to hold everyone together even as things start to unravel.

The cast also includes Ed Begley Jr. (Young Sheldon) as Edward, Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra Terrestrial) as Grace, Eric Edelstein (Twin Peaks) as Hank, Rafael Casal (Loki) as Neil, Mousa Hussein Kraish (American Gods) as Dr. McGinnis, Beth Bailey (Outer Range) as Kayleigh, Karan Soni (Miracle Workers) as Toby, and Jane Kaczmarek (Malcom in the Middle) as Lilly.
With a cast like this and more surprises on the way, The Boroughs looks like it will be full of drama, sci-fi twists, and plenty of humor. If the cast is anything to go by, viewers are in for a treat.
