This award-winning production will bring movement, memory, and truth to Tiffany Street Theater for one powerful weekend.
axes, herbs and satchels: open the archives is the latest investigative theater piece by The Anthropologists, a women-led NYC company known for physical storytelling and truth-telling art. The play will wrap its NYC tour with three final performances in The Bronx from May 9–11 at Tiffany Street Theater.
At the center of the story is Kamara, a journalist reckoning with the death of her sister during childbirth. Her search for answers leads her into the buried history of Black midwives, ancestral birthing practices, and community care that once protected generations of women.
What makes this production stand out isn't just its storytelling — it’s the collective care behind it. The show was co-written and co-directed by Sandie Luna and Melissa Moschitto and guided by anthropologist-in-residence Nadia N. Mbonde. Every movement, line, and sound was shaped with intention.

The production received the NYC Women’s Fund Award, created to amplify women's voices and fuel New York's creative economy — funding that made it possible to bring the show to three boroughs.
The Bronx run is made possible by a partnership between local arts anchors ID Studio Theater and Inspiration Point. The final performance on Mother’s Day (May 11) includes free childcare, offered through a partnership with Broadway Babysitters and the Parent Artist Advocacy League.
