Award-winning actor set to perform Edgar Allan Poe's spine-tingling work at the iconic author’s home

At Poe Park in The Bronx, where the historic Edgar Allan Poe Cottage still stands, the master of the macabre's words will come alive this spooky season. On Saturday, October 18 at 8 p.m., The Bronx County Historical Society (BCHS) presents actor Stephen Smith in a chilling, live adaptation of Poe's 'The Raven' and 'The Black Cat.' The free performance is open to the public, but seating is limited, so arriving early is encouraged.

Smith's one-man play, One Man Poe, uses Poe's original 1840s text to bring the author's dark imagination to the stage. Rather than rely on jump scares or gore, Smith delivers a performance that leans on atmosphere, language, and psychological tension. "One Man Poe isn't about jump scares or gore," Smith told Starburst Magazine. "It's about atmosphere, storytelling, and human psychology. Even if horror isn't your usual genre, you'll be drawn in by the language, the theatricality, and the emotional depth."

In 1976, Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton fought their third and final match at Yankee Stadium. It was a controversial fight and the last boxing match held at the old ballpark, set against The Bronx's turmoil and pop culture highs.

A seasoned performer and Artistic Director of Threedumb Theatre, Smith has toured his solo work internationally, winning awards such as Best Horror Solo Show at the Edinburgh Fringe Spookies Awards 2024 and Best Overall Show at Edinburgh Fringe 2025. He also earned Best Adaptation honors at Poe Fest International in Baltimore and Best Performance (Dramatic) at the Liverpool Fringe Awards 2023.

One Man Poe revisits two of literature's most chilling classics: the guilt-ridden narrator haunted by his cat in The Black Cat and the mournful scholar forever shadowed by the mysterious bird in The Raven. These stories, written nearly two centuries ago, remain a cornerstone of horror and science fiction. Poe's exploration of psychological torment and the supernatural continues to inspire writers and filmmakers today, from Gothic novels to modern thrillers.
