Production has wrapped on Scooby-Doo: Origins, Netflix’s live-action reimagining of the mystery-solving teenagers and their famous canine companion.
The series is expected to premiere globally in 2027. Netflix has not announced a specific release date.
Unlike earlier live-action adaptations, Scooby will be portrayed by a real Great Dane. The production choice is a first for the franchise, but the new dog is not the only notable change.
Scooby-Doo: Origins begins before Mystery Inc. exists. Shaggy Rogers and Daphne Blake are already friends when they spend their final summer at camp. There, they encounter a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder.
The investigation connects them with Velma Dinkley, described as a pragmatic and scientific local, and Fred Jones, a handsome but unusual newcomer. Together, the four teenagers attempt to solve the case while confronting secrets of their own.
That setup gives Scooby a more direct place in the central mystery. Instead of joining an established group or following the teenagers into danger, the puppy becomes one of the reasons they come together.
Tanner Hagen stars as Shaggy, with Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) as Daphne, Abby Ryder Fortson (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.) as Velma, and Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space) as Fred.

Netflix’s updated cast list also includes Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), André Benjamin (High Life), Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull), Rusty Schwimmer (The Pitt), Peter Macon (The Orville), Sara Gilbert (The Conners), and Bruce McGill (Reacher).
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers through Midnight Radio. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman executive produce through Berlanti Productions. Toby Haynes directed the premiere and also serves as an executive producer.
The series was filmed in Atlanta and is produced by Warner Bros. Television.
For now, the production image offers one final clue about the show’s approach: a young Scooby with his familiar collar and “SD” tag sitting inside what looks like a colorful Mystery Machine.
