Peaky Blinders is not done with Birmingham. Netflix and the BBC have confirmed two new six-episode series set in the 1950s, with Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers) stepping into the role of Duke Shelby, the oldest son of Tommy Shelby.

The announcement comes just two weeks after Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man became Netflix's number one film globally, a position it has held since its March 20 launch. Series creator and writer Steven Knight is back, and production is already underway at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham.

Duke Shelby is a role that has been played by three actors in four years. Conrad Khan introduced the character in Season 6 of the original series. Barry Keoghan carried him through The Immortal Man.

Now Bell takes over for a story set a decade after the film's events, with the official logline describing Duke as "older, wiser, more ambitious, and most certainly more dangerous." The new series picks up in a post-war city where rebuilding Birmingham has become, in Knight's words, a brutal contest of mythical dimensions.

Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) is confirmed to lead the cast alongside Bell. Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die), and Lucy Karczewski (Stereophonic) round out the announced cast. Karczewski, who has worked in theater, makes her television debut with this role. Details on the characters each actor will play have not yet been released.

Knight did not hold back his excitement. "I am thrilled that we are announcing a new era of Peaky Blinders, moving the story to post-war Birmingham in the early 50s," he said. "We are incredibly fortunate to have Jamie Bell taking the role of Tommy Shelby's oldest son, Duke, and to have the incredible Charlie Heaton also leading the cast. There are more exciting cast announcements to come, and Peaky is on the road again."

The two series are produced by Banijay UK's Kudos and Garrison Drama for Netflix globally and for BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom. A premiere date has not been announced. Since its debut on BBC Two in 2013, Peaky Blinders has built a worldwide following and took home the BAFTA for Best Drama Series in 2018.
