The first female investigator in a male-dominated Bureau is handed a missing persons case, and the answers may be harder to uncover than expected. That is the setup for Netflix’s The God of the Woods, starring Maya Hawke. The series, based on Liz Moore’s bestselling novel, is now in development, with production details and a release date still to be announced.
Hawke will play Judy Luptack, a sharp and quietly determined investigator assigned to solve the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl from a summer camp in upstate New York’s Adirondacks. The case unfolds in the shadow of an earlier family tragedy, raising questions about what really happened and who may be protecting the truth.

The story centers on the wealthy Van Laar family, whose influence begins to crack as past and present collide. As the investigation deepens, long-held secrets surface, along with tensions tied to class, privilege, and power. The series builds its tension through both the mystery and the people involved, giving the case emotional weight beyond the headlines.
The project brings together co-showrunners Liz Hannah (Mindhunter) and Moore, who also serves as executive producer. Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty will produce through Original Film, with Sony Pictures Television as the studio.
Hawke’s casting signals a character-driven approach, with Judy positioned not just as the lead investigator but as someone navigating a system that has not always made room for her. That dynamic may shape how the case unfolds and how the audience connects with it.
Best known for her role as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things, Hawke has become a familiar presence on Netflix, earning attention for performances that balance humor and emotional depth.
