Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the mind behind BoJack Horseman, is heading back to Netflix with a new animated series, Long Story Short. This time, the story trades Hollywood satire for a more personal kind of drama — one that stretches across decades in the life of a single family. The series premieres August 22, 2025.

Set in motion by the lives of the Schwooper siblings, Long Story Short follows them from childhood through adulthood — and then loops back again. Along the way, we see what growing up really looks like: the wins, the losses, the quiet in-betweens.

It’s not about big twists or shocking revelations. It’s about the slow, funny, and sometimes bittersweet path a family takes over time.

Bob-Waksberg serves as showrunner and executive producer, joined by long-time collaborators Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen of Tornante Television. Lisa Hanawalt, known for her signature visual style on BoJack and Tuca & Bertie, is on board as supervising producer. Animation comes from ShadowMachine, the studio also known for Pinocchio and Tuca & Bertie.

When BoJack Horseman debuted on August 22, 2014, it wasn’t just another cartoon. It helped redefine what adult animation could do — blending comedy with emotional weight and long-term character arcs. That same date, eleven years later, now marks the launch of Long Story Short, suggesting a new era for Bob-Waksberg and his creative team.

The Schwooper family may not live in a world of talking animals or washed-up celebrities, but their journey might hit even closer to home. Time will tell how their story unfolds — and who sees their own reflection in it.
