What happens when three estranged sisters embark on a pilgrimage through rural Mexico? A journey filled with laughter, healing, and unexpected twists.
Las Tres Sisters will make its theatrical debut on February 21, 2025, bringing a heartfelt and comedic tale of family, love, and self-discovery to audiences. The film follows three sisters, once close but now distant, as they reunite to fulfill their beloved grandmother's pilgrimage. With nothing but an old map and no hiking experience, their adventure along the Talpa de Allende trail becomes a mix of humor, emotional revelations, and unexpected encounters, including a local with a mysterious past who changes their journey forever.
It stars Valeria Maldonado (Inside, Coco) as Lucia, Marta Méndez Cross (The Bounce Back) as Maria, Virginia Novello (In Absentia) as Sofia, Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso) as Kin, Adam Mayfield (Ford v Ferrari) as Harold, and Laura Patalano (This Fool) as the voice of Abuelita. Las Tres Sisters began as a short film, Sisters, in 2015. What started as a passion project between longtime friends Marta Méndez Cross, Valeria Maldonado, and Virginia Novello grew into a feature-length film over nearly a decade.
Despite receiving recognition for its script, securing funding was a challenge, as many producers were hesitant to back a film without A-list stars. However, persistence paid off when the project won LALIFF’s Work in Progress Fund, receiving financial support from Amazon Studios. Members of Ted Lasso's post-production team later joined to help bring the film to completion.
The film made its festival debut at the Raindance Film Festival in London, selling out its premiere and earning rave reviews. It continued to screen at festivals across the U.S. and Mexico, capturing hearts with its mix of comedy and deep emotional storytelling. Now, after years of dedication, Las Tres Sisters is ready for its big-screen release.

Directed by Mar Novo, the film blends authentic cultural storytelling with universal themes of love, forgiveness, and family bonds. In her director's statement, Novo also shared why she connected deeply with the film's themes.
"As the eldest of two sisters in a large Mexican family, I've learned that the only way through hardship is through love. I chose to direct Las Tres Sisters during a time when I also needed healing with my own family. Being a lesbian woman in Mexico is not as widely accepted or embraced as it is in the US. Coming out created a strain on the magic and deep love I have always shared with my family. I was left with a deep and complicated wound. This story spoke to my heart and made me laugh through healing tears."
The film's lead actresses—Marta Méndez Cross, Valeria Maldonado, and Virginia Novello—also served as writers and producers, making this a deeply personal project.
