The upcoming Apple TV+ mystery Imperfect Women brings together an ensemble cast led by Emmy Award winners Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), alongside Kate Mara (House of Cards). Created for television by Annie Weisman (Physical), the limited series places women both in front of and behind the camera, with Washington and Moss also serving as executive producers.

The eight-episode psychological thriller premieres on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes on March 18, followed by new episodes released weekly. Based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same name, the story centers on three longtime friends whose lives begin to unravel after a murder investigation forces buried secrets to the surface.

At the center of the story are three women whose friendship stretches back years. Moss plays Mary, one of the core members of the trio. In Hall’s novel, Mary is described as a highly intelligent woman whose life has taken an unexpected turn after marriage and family reshape her path.

Washington plays Eleanor, a driven and independent friend who must confront uncomfortable truths as the investigation unfolds. Mara plays Nancy, the third friend whose death sets the story in motion and raises questions about how well the women truly knew one another.

The series also features Joel Kinnaman (For All Mankind) as Robert, Nancy’s husband, who must deal with the aftermath of the tragedy and the secrets it reveals. Corey Stoll (Billions) plays Howard, Mary’s husband. Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) appears as Donovan, while Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty) plays Detective Ganz, the investigator looking into Nancy’s death.

Additional cast members include Sandrine Holt (Better Call Saul), Keith Carradine (Madam Secretary), Sherri Saum (The Fosters), Audrey Zahn (Wildcat), Jill Wagner (Special Ops: Lioness), Rome Flynn (With Love), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Violette Linnz (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Indiana Elle (The Housemaid), Jackson Kelly (The Pitt), and Wilson Bethel (All Rise).

Behind the scenes, Imperfect Women continues Weisman’s collaboration with Apple TV+ after the dramedy Physical. The series is produced by 20th Television and Apple Studios. Moss executive produces with Lindsey McManus through Love & Squalor Pictures, while Washington produces through her Simpson Street banner alongside Pilar Savone. Author Araminta Hall and writer Kay Oyegun also serve as executive producers, with Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland) directing the first episode.

Speaking about the project, Moss said the strength of Hall’s novel helped attract a strong group of actors and filmmakers to the series. “We put the best people on this project, and it just came together that way because of the material. Araminta Hall wrote a beautiful book, and it just attracted all these great people, including the actors and behind the scenes. It always just starts with the material, especially with actors of this caliber.”

While the television adaptation may take its own path, Hall’s novel describes a story shaped by friendship, loyalty, and the difficult truths people sometimes hide from those closest to them.
