What to Know
Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames in Netflix’s seven-part East of Eden.
The John Steinbeck adaptation begins streaming October 1 on Netflix.
Many viewers know Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, the Russian-trained spy and assassin who recently appeared as Black Widow in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This fall, Pugh will trade Marvel action for a far more calculating role. She stars as Cathy Ames in East of Eden, the seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, which begins streaming Thursday, October 1 on Netflix.
Cathy stands at the center of a story shaped by ambition, betrayal, and choices that affect several generations. The series follows her life alongside the Trask and Hamilton families as they settle in California’s Salinas Valley.
The role draws on another side of Pugh’s career. She played Cordelia opposite Anthony Hopkins in the 2018 television film King Lear and earned an Academy Award nomination for playing Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 coming-of-age period drama Little Women. Both performances show Pugh's experience playing major characters adapted from classic works of literature.

Zoe Kazan, who wrote and executive produced all seven episodes, told Netflix’s Tudum that Pugh was her only choice for Cathy.
“I didn't have another person that I thought would be just as good. She [Florence Pugh] is the exact right person to play Cathy.”
Kazan also has a personal connection to Steinbeck’s story. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 East of Eden film starring James Dean. That movie adapted only part of the novel, while the Netflix series has more room to follow its wider, multigenerational story.
Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders round out the cast. Pugh also serves as an executive producer.
Garth Davis directed Episodes 1 through 4, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the final three. Kazan and Jeb Stuart serve as co-showrunners. Unlike the classic film, this version places Cathy firmly at the heart of the family saga.
