Michael Connelly fans have a new show to look forward to. Ballard, starring Maggie Q, brings another one of his best-selling crime novel characters to the screen. All 10 episodes drop Wednesday, July 9, on Prime Video, expanding the Bosch universe with a fresh new detective at the center.

The show follows Detective Renée Ballard, who’s been put in charge of the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division. It’s a small team with a low profile and a long list of cases that no one else wants. Ballard and her team tackle the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she investigates a murdered John Doe and a possible serial killer, she uncovers a dangerous conspiracy buried deep within the LAPD.

Alongside Maggie Q, the cast features Amy Hill as Ballard’s grandmother, Tutu; John Carroll Lynch as her former partner, Thomas Laffont; Michael Mosley as reserve officer Ted Rawls; Rebecca Field as volunteer Colleen Hatteras; Victoria Moroles as legal intern Martina Castro; Courtney Taylor as Ballard’s protégé, Samira Parker; Hector Hugo as Captain Berchem; Noah Bean as Jake Pearlman; and Michael Cassidy as Aaron.

Ballard first appeared in Connelly’s 2017 novel The Late Show. After speaking out about misconduct, she was pushed to the night shift and gained a reputation for taking on the hard work others avoided. In later books, she teams up with Harry Bosch and learns from his relentless approach to justice. That connection continues in the show, with Titus Welliver returning as Bosch in guest appearances.

The trailer suggests that, like Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, this new series maintains the gritty, realistic style fans expect. The cold case unit is stretched thin, and Ballard’s team consists mostly of volunteers. But with the occasional help from retired detective Bosch, they remain determined to solve crimes that have sat unsolved for years.

It’ll be interesting to see how Maggie Q as Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth. Ballard expands Connelly’s universe in a fresh direction, giving another detective her time in the spotlight.
