Who Killed the Montreal Expos? arrives on Netflix October 21, bringing a fresh look at one of baseball’s most painful goodbyes. The documentary retraces the team’s final years and asks the lingering question that has haunted fans since 2004: Why did Canada’s first Major League Baseball team disappear?

The Expos, founded in 1969, were more than just another ballclub. For 35 years, they gave Montreal a place on baseball’s international stage and built a passionate following that stretched across generations. Olympic Stadium was filled on September 29, 2004, for the team’s final home game. Fans held up signs reading “Fan 4 Ever,” many in tears, as the Expos received one last standing ovation.

Players shared in the emotion. Pitcher Joey Eischen told the crowd, “You guys have been great. The people of Montreal have been great. The workers at the stadium, super people. I wish we could stay and play a couple more years. Thank you all very much for coming out.” Former Expos player Kevin Hill added, “We never got the opportunity to achieve what we set out to do. It just got cut short.”

Directed by Jean-François Poisson, the film blends rare archival footage with new interviews from Hall of Famers Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., and Larry Walker, along with beloved manager Felipe Alou, journalists, and devoted fans.

Together, they trace the choices and controversies that pushed the franchise out of Montreal. The story unfolds like a mystery, piecing together setbacks, ownership changes, and league decisions that left the city without its beloved team.

The Expos weren’t just part of sports history; they were stitched into the city’s culture. That sense of absence has lingered, with each season rekindling the hope that baseball might someday return.

Since word spread about the documentary, it’s clear that twenty years later, fans still miss their team and still want answers. Who Killed the Montreal Expos? offers a window into the highs and lows of a franchise that mattered far beyond the box score. It’s not only a baseball story but also a cultural one, showing how deeply a city can be tied to its team, and how quickly that bond can be broken.
