What to Know
THE WAR I KNOW debuts June 29 and 30 at Pregones/PRTT
The story of a Bronx family facing the HIV/AIDS crisis
Featuring performers from TV, film, music, and theater.
The AIDS epidemic that swept through the 1980s and 90s was a catastrophic global health crisis, marked by the rapid spread of disease, widespread fear and stigma, and a lack of decisive government action leading to the loss of millions of lives.
Yet behind those numbers were families, communities, and personal experiences that are still being explored through art and storytelling today.
Egg & Spoon Theatre Collective will present public readings of THE WAR I KNOW by Bronx playwright Dominic Colón on June 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. at Pregones/PRTT, located at 575 Walton Avenue. The free event is part of INCUBATE NYC 2026, Egg & Spoon's initiative supporting playwrights of color from New York City's outer boroughs.
Colón's work includes the television adaptation of Fat Joe's memoir The Book of Jose and Bronx Grace, a medical drama he co-created alongside Emmy Award nominee Steven Canals. THE WAR I KNOW follows a Bronx family navigating the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s through the eyes of Eggie, a young gay Latino boy struggling to understand both the world around him and his place within it.
The reading is directed by award-winning playwright, educator, and performer Rudi Goblen, whose work spans theater, poetry, and devised performance. A 2025 USA Fellow, Goblen is also a recipient of the Colman Domingo Award and a three-time winner of playwriting awards from the Kennedy Center.

Bringing the story to audiences is a cast with experience across television, film, Broadway, and New York theater. Wilson Cruz, whose credits include My So-Called Life and Star Trek: Discovery, made television history in 1994 as Rickie Vasquez, one of the first openly gay characters on U.S. primetime television. Gregory Diaz IV's credits include In the Heights, the film Vampires vs. The Bronx, and Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
The cast also includes Antonio "AJAY" Ortiz, known for portraying Shawn "Famous" Figueroa on Power Book III: Raising Kanan; Haskiri Velazquez, whose credits include Saved by the Bell and various New York theater productions; Yadira Guevara-Prip, whose work includes Supernatural, Star Trek: Discovery, and Grey's Anatomy; and Nyseli Vega, who was part of the original Broadway cast of Alicia Keys' Hell's Kitchen and is also a singer, performer, and co-creator of the vocal group Ménage Music.
Founded in 2017, Egg & Spoon Theatre Collective develops new work through productions, workshops, and readings that connect artists and audiences through community-centered storytelling. In 2025, the company received a Drama Desk nomination for The Voices in Your Head.
"We're especially excited about this project because it brings the work back to the Bronx, where the story is set, and creates an opportunity for audiences to engage with the play alongside local organizations and community partners," said Haley Covington, Communications Coordinator for Egg & Spoon Theatre Collective.
The event is free and open to the public. Complimentary food and beverages will be available before the reading, and advance registration is available through Pregones/PRTT.
