One impulsive kiss turns an academic dilemma into a romantic experiment in The Love Hypothesis, arriving Wednesday, September 23 on Prime Video. Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) and Tom Bateman (Hedda) star in the film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s best-selling novel, directed by Claire Scanlon from a screenplay by Sarah Rothschild.
Reinhart plays Olive, a Ph.D. candidate whose academic plans are more orderly than her personal life. After realizing that her best friend Ahn, played by Rachel Marsh (Fallout), has feelings for Jeremy, played by Nicholas Duvernay (The White Lotus), Olive kisses professor Adam Carlsen, played by Bateman, to make it clear that she has moved on.
The quick decision becomes a fake relationship with conditions that appear manageable on paper. As Olive and Adam spend more time together, their agreement becomes harder to separate from their real feelings.
Jaboukie Young-White (Rap Sh!t) plays Olive’s friend Malcolm, while Arty Froushan (Daredevil: Born Again) appears as Tom. Reinhart also serves as an executive producer alongside Hazelwood, giving both the film’s lead and the original author a role behind the camera.

Hazelwood published The Love Hypothesis through Berkley in 2021. The romance spent 10 months on The New York Times best-seller list, according to Entertainment Weekly, and its publishing rights were sold in 40 countries.
Before becoming a full-time novelist, Hazelwood earned a doctorate in neuroscience and worked as a professor, experience that gives the book’s academic world an unusual connection to its author.
Scanlon previously directed the workplace romantic comedy Set It Up and The People We Hate at the Wedding. Her background also includes directing television comedies and Emmy-winning editing work on The Office.
Production took place in Montreal during summer 2025, although Olive’s story comes from the competitive world of university science. The Canadian shoot gave the filmmakers a stand-in for the novel’s American academic setting.
