A country club feud over pickleball turns into an unlikely comeback story when The Dink premieres globally on Apple TV+ on July 24. The comedy stars Jake Johnson (New Girl) as a former tennis prodigy trying to rebuild his life after injury forces him off the court. The film also features Mary Steenburgen (Book Club), Ed Harris (Top Gun: Maverick), and former tennis champion Andy Roddick, who appears as himself.

In The Dink, Johnson plays Dusty Boyd, a once-promising tennis player who now spends his days coaching unruly kids at his father’s suburban country club. His father, Chuck, played by Harris, is locked in a battle with a new trend sweeping through the club: pickleball.

Dusty is desperate to win his father’s approval, so he supports Chuck’s effort to stop the sport from taking over the courts. But when Dusty reinjures himself and loses the ability to play tennis, he is forced to try something new during rehab. That something turns out to be pickleball.

What begins as a reluctant experiment soon changes Dusty’s outlook. With help from his new playing partner, Candace, played by Steenburgen, he starts to enjoy the sport that once threatened his identity.

The situation becomes even more complicated when Dusty must confront his past failures, including a rivalry with tennis star Andy Roddick, who appears in the film as Dusty’s childhood nemesis. As tensions rise at the club, Dusty finds himself pulled into a battle that goes beyond sports. The future of the club, his father’s respect, and his own sense of self are all on the line.

The supporting cast adds several well-known comedic voices, including Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille), Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live), Chris Parnell (Rick and Morty), Aaron Chen (Fisk), and Ben Stiller (Night at the Museum).

The Dink is directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar). Stiller also produces through Red Hour Films alongside John Lesher, Rob Paris, and Mike Witherill. Johnson serves as a producer as well. The screenplay was written by Sean Clements (Workaholics).
