A true-to-life musical drama about love and redemption
Song Sung Blue arrives in theaters on December 25, bringing the story of a Neil Diamond tribute band to the big screen. Directed by Craig Brewer and starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, the film tells the story of Mike and Claire Sardina, a struggling couple who discover love and purpose through music. The biographical drama will be distributed by Focus Features.
Based on the 2008 documentary by Greg Kohs, the film turns a real-life story into a character-driven musical journey. Jackman and Hudson take on the roles of the Sardinas, who form the band Lightning & Thunder after years of setbacks. Together, they bring Neil Diamond’s music to life in a way that blends humor, heartbreak, and resilience. “It’s about finding redemption in the unlikeliest of places,” Brewer said in a statement provided with the film’s release.

Joining the cast are Michael Imperioli, Fisher Stevens, Jim Belushi, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, and Hudson Hilbert Hensley. With a mix of veteran talent and fresh energy, the ensemble helps round out a story that leans on both grit and glamour. Neil Diamond’s classic tracks are woven throughout the film, promising audiences a mix of nostalgia and discovery.

Brewer, best known for Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, has built a reputation for stories that combine music with raw emotional power. That background sets the tone for Song Sung Blue, which aims to balance realism with the larger-than-life feel of a stage performance. The production team includes Brewer, John Davis, and John Fox as executive producers.
Holiday releases often compete for attention, but Song Sung Blue offers a different kind of spectacle: a small-scale love story with big musical moments. For fans of biographical dramas, Neil Diamond, or simply a good redemption tale, this one could strike the right chord.
