For the first time in 50+ years, Sesame Street has a new home and is headed to Netflix. The streaming platform will premiere the show's all-new Season 56 later this year, along with 90 hours of classic episodes, bringing the global educational brand to a brand-new audience. The move comes as part of a unique distribution partnership that will also keep the series free on PBS and PBS KIDS digital platforms in the U.S.
The upcoming season introduces a revamped structure with tighter stories, more interaction, and returning fan favorites. Each episode will center on one 11-minute narrative, featuring characters like Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Cookie Monster in heart-filled, humor-packed adventures.
Season 56 will blend beloved segments like Elmo's World and Cookie Monster's Foodie Truck with brand-new additions, including Cookie Monster's "Cookie Cart" and Abby's whimsical "Fairy Garden." The format also includes fourth-wall-breaking moments, animation overlays with sparkles and bubbles, and a new animated segment titled Tales from 123, a peek inside the iconic apartment building that Sesame Street residents call home.

These changes reflect a broader effort by Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind the series, to keep the show fresh and relevant for today’s young viewers. And while the format may be evolving, the core mission will reportedly remain the same: supporting early childhood development through storytelling, play, and joy.
Netflix holds exclusive worldwide streaming rights for the new season, but U.S. viewers can still watch for free thanks to a continued partnership with PBS. New episodes will be available on the same day in the US on PBS stations and PBS KIDS digital platforms, extending the show’s legacy of public service and accessibility.
Netflix can also create video games based on Sesame Street and Sesame Street: Mecha Builders, further expanding its footprint in educational entertainment.
Season 56 is executive produced by Sal Perez and Kay Wilson Stallings, with Emmy and NAACP Award-nominated creator Halcyon Person stepping in as head writer. Person previously led Netflix's Karma’s World and Dee & Friends in Oz. Episodes will be released in three batches, with exact dates to be announced.
