Bob Odenkirk returns to the big screen in Normal, a new neo-Western film from Magnolia Pictures that opens in theaters on April 17, 2026. Directed by Ben Wheatley, the film stars Odenkirk as a substitute sheriff whose attempt at a quieter life is interrupted by a bank robbery that uncovers something far more serious beneath the surface of a small town.

Odenkirk plays Ulysses, a provisional sheriff assigned to the town of Normal after a difficult period in his personal life and career. The move is meant to give him distance from marital strain and lingering guilt tied to earlier decisions on the job. At first, the town seems calm and predictable, the kind of place where nothing ever happens.

Alongside Odenkirk, Normal also stars Henry Winkler as the mayor of Normal, Lena Headey as Moira, Billy MacLellan as Deputy Mike Nelson, Brendan Fletcher as Keith, Ryan Allen as Blaine Anderson, Peter Shinkoda as Joe, and Jess McLeod as Alex. The film initially premiered this year at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.

From the trailer, Ulysses appears to have found the ideal quiet life as the new sheriff of a sleepy town. That sense of calm does not last. A poorly executed bank robbery pulls him into a situation that quickly grows beyond a routine investigation. As he responds to the crime, he begins to realize the town is hiding something dangerous. The deeper he looks, the clearer it becomes that Normal is anything but ordinary.

Behind the camera, Normal reunites Odenkirk with producer Marc Provissiero and writer-producer Derek Kolstad, following their earlier collaboration on Nobody. Kolstad is also known as the creator of the John Wick franchise. The film is produced by Provissiero, Odenkirk, and Kolstad in partnership with QWGmire.

Ben Wheatley, whose past films include Free Fire and High-Rise, directs the project. Executive producers include Molly C. Quinn, Matthew M. Welty, Elan Gale, Josh Adler, Rhonda Baker, Carrie Wilkins, Glenn Feig, Matthew J. Anderson, Jared D. Underwood, Andrew C. Robinson, and Ellen Rutter.
