Lurker premieres October 10, 2025, streaming exclusively on MUBI. The thriller follows a retail clerk who crosses paths with a rising pop star, and what starts as a lucky break quickly slips into dangerous territory. Written and directed by Alex Russell, known for The Bear and Beef, the film first screened at Sundance earlier this year.

The cast includes Théodore Pellerin, Archie Madekwe, Sunny Suljic, Havana Rose Liu, Zack Fox, and Daniel Zolghadri. Their performances drive a story about blurred lines between fans and celebrities, showing how admiration can spiral into something far more threatening. According to the film’s synopsis, access to the star’s world soon becomes a matter of survival.

Russell comes to this project after shaping some of television’s most talked-about shows. He won an Emmy Award as co-executive producer on Netflix and A24’s Beef and was a supervising producer on FX’s The Bear. His episode “Forks” in season two was one of the most celebrated of the year and picked up a Writers Guild of America nomination. Earlier in his career, he worked on Dave and Interior Chinatown. With Lurker, he moves into feature directing while keeping his focus on character-driven tension.

Advanced TV Herstory: When I first started writing about TV shows, it was a way to manage anxiety. TalkTeaV eventually grew into something more, but I hadn't given much thought to behind-the-scenes stories or about women's contributions to the industry until I heard this one podcast. The film also connects to current conversations about the closeness between fans and public figures. Social media has made it easier than ever to follow celebrities, but it has also blurred personal boundaries. Lurker plays on that cultural shift, using it as fuel for a suspenseful story that feels both timely and unsettling. MUBI, a platform known for championing independent voices, will make the film available worldwide this fall.

With its mix of new talent, sharp direction, and a theme that speaks to today’s online culture, Lurker is set to be one of the season’s most talked-about thrillers. For Russell, it marks a new chapter in a career already filled with standout television work.
