Movie fans have been frustrated by the dominance of big-budget franchises. However, from watching the trailer to Last Breath, a survival thriller from Focus Features, it looks and feels like what makes going to the movies exciting. Scheduled for release on February 28, 2025, this film might just be the breath of fresh air that cinema lovers have been craving.

Based on a true story, Last Breath follows seasoned deep-sea divers racing against time to save their crewmate, trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface. Starring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole, this film focuses on teamwork, resilience, and survival--the kind of high-stakes storytelling that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

Unlike many modern thrillers that rely on CGI spectacle, Last Breath leans into authenticity. Filming took place in the North Sea, the actual location of the real-life incident, onboard the ship the real events took place on, and the cast trained in real dive tanks to ensure genuine underwater sequences.

The story behind Last Breath was first told in the critically acclaimed 2019 documentary of the same name, directed by Alex Parkinson and Richard da Costa. The film's harrowing true events captivated audiences, leading to its adaptation into a feature film. Parkinson, who co-wrote and directed the original documentary, also helms this narrative version, ensuring a level of realism and intensity rarely seen in today’s action thrillers.

Actors Harrelson and Liu were instantly drawn to the project after watching the documentary. Harrelson remarked, "Once I saw the documentary, I was already in. People love it. I loved it." Liu, similarly, found himself captivated by the high-risk world of saturation diving, saying, "I was absolutely taken aback by not only the story but also the introduction to this world, which was unlike anything I had ever known."

I won't argue, 'The trailer seems to show too much,' but I think it works well here to let moviegoers know what to expect.

Check out the trailer and see for yourself:

Last Breath has a strong supporting cast alongside its main actors. Cliff Curtis plays Andre Jenson. He is known for his roles in Whale Rider and Once Were Warriors, and he also stars in James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels, including Avatar: Fire & Ash. MyAnna Buring plays Hanna, the 1st Officer. She is recognized for her work in The Witcher and The Responder.

From the trailer alone, Last Breath has the feel of a classic movie-going-intense, immersive experience where you grab a bag of popcorn (the kind in a paper bag, not a souvenir bucket) and get lost in the story. It’s the kind of film that doesn’t need an expanded universe or post-credit scenes to make an impact—it simply wants to deliver a thrilling, self-contained ride.
