If Martin Mull seemed to turn up everywhere, that was partly because he never stayed in one creative lane. Who Is Martin Mull?, a new documentary directed by the late Bob Saget and Neil Berkeley (SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night), begins streaming worldwide Oct. 7 on Netflix.
The film follows Mull’s unusual path through music, comedy, television and painting. Instead of treating those pursuits as separate careers, it looks at how he continued reinventing himself while moving from folk clubs to sitcom sets and art galleries.
Mull, who died in 2024 at age 80, tells part of the story in his own words. Friends and fellow performers Steve Martin, Tom Waits and David Alan Grier also appear, offering their views of the man behind a career that resisted an easy label.

Saget directed the documentary with Berkeley before his death in 2022. Saget also served as an executive producer alongside Kevin S. Bright, Morgan Neville and Caitrin Rogers. Sean Bradley, Tara Billik and Berkeley produced the film.
For viewers who primarily remember Mull from television, the documentary widens the frame. His screen career included Fernwood 2 Night, Roseanne, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Arrested Development, but acting represented only one part of his work.
Mull described the experience more simply. In footage used for the documentary, he said he “had a hell of a ride.”
Who Is Martin Mull? joins Netflix’s October lineup of comedy documentaries, which also includes films about Norm Macdonald, Maria Bamford and SCTV.
