What Is The ’Burbs?

The ’Burbs is a mystery comedy series that premiered on Peacock on February 8, 2026, as a full season binge. Set in the quiet community of Hinkley Hills, the story follows Samira and Rob Fisher, new parents who just moved from the city into Rob’s childhood home. They were looking for a little more space and safety in a town marketed as the safest community in America, but they might have found the exact opposite.

Samira is a city-raised litigator currently on maternity leave, and she is finding the transition to suburban life a bit isolating. As she starts to settle in, things take a turn when she starts paying attention to the abandoned Victorian house across the street, which local legend links to an old murder. When a strange new neighbor moves in, the town’s reputation starts to crumble as old secrets and new deadly threats surface.

The four characters are gathered outdoors at night, standing behind a stone ledge or railing. Lynn stands on the far left in a red coat with an alarmed expression; Samira is next to her, holding a wine glass and looking concerned. To their right, Dana looks upward with a weary face while Tod points dramatically toward something off-camera with a focused, intense gaze.

Cast and Characters

Keke Palmer leads the cast as Samira Fisher. Her legal background and natural curiosity serve as the engine for the investigation into the neighborhood’s dark past. Palmer is also behind the scenes as an executive producer.

Jack Whitehall plays her husband, Rob Fisher, a book editor who grew up right there in Hinkley Hills. As the mystery deepens, Samira begins to suspect that Rob might be hiding something sinister from his own past, putting a strain on their new life.

Justin Kirk joins the cast as Gary, the unfriendly and secretive neighbor who moves into that creepy Victorian house. His presence is the spark that sets off Samira’s suspicions.

The Fishers are surrounded by a colorful group of Hinkley Hills locals, including Lynn Gardner (Julia Duffy), Dana Richards (Paula Pell), Tod Mann (Mark Proksch), and Naveen Varma (Kapil Talwalkar).

Television Context and Legacy

This series takes its cues from the 1989 cult classic film of the same name. While it carves out its own timeline, it is packed with nods for longtime fans. Keep an eye out for the classic sardines and pretzels snack during a tense neighborly visit, or the way the leaves swirl around Samira’s feet, a direct visual callback to the original movie.

The show reworks the story for a modern audience, focusing on what community and isolation look like today. While the original film took place on Mayfield Place, the series updates the setting to a cul-de-sac called Ashfield Place.

Original Cast Members

Wendy Schaal: Fans of the 1989 film will remember her as Bonnie Rumsfield. Here, she plays a librarian named Judy who holds the keys to the town's history and a cold case involving a young girl who disappeared twenty years ago.

Corey Feldman: The original Ricky Butler makes a return in the season finale. Feldman shows up as a pool hustler with platinum hair, giving a wink to his iconic line from the film by declaring, "God, I love this place."

Tom Hanks: While he does not appear in person, his likeness shows up as a clever Easter egg. He appears in vintage black and white footage as H. Horace Hinkley, the mining magnate and philanthropist who founded the town.

Homages to the Original Cast

Carrie Fisher: The show honors the late actress, who played Carol Peterson in the movie, by giving the main family her last name. That is why Samira and Rob are the Fishers.

Bruce Dern: Though Dern does not appear, his character, Mark Rumsfield, lives on through references, particularly in the constant neighborhood bickering over dogs using lawns as bathrooms.

Music, Design, and Production Details

Jonathan Furmanski served as the director of photography, with Susie Mancini handling the production design. The show’s look was rounded out by costume designers Dominique Dawson for the pilot and Trayce Gigi Field for the rest of the season.

The production set up shop on the historic Colonial Street at the Universal Studios Backlot in Los Angeles. This street has a massive history, having served as the original film's set before becoming Wisteria Lane for Desperate Housewives. The centerpiece of the show is the Munster Mansion.

While the house in the original movie was a temporary set that was torn down, the series used the permanent Munster house on the lot, restoring its creepy Victorian look to serve as the mysterious residence across the street from the Fishers.

Note: The series currently has one season as of this article’s publication on February 9, 2026. For the most up-to-date episode list and availability, check NBC or Peacock.
