A new play set in the Bronx, exploring family, identity, and the HIV/AIDS crisis, is getting a public reading this month. It's part of a program that helps playwrights from New York City's outer boroughs develop their work.


Egg & Spoon Theatre Collective is bringing THE WAR I KNOW, written by Dominic Colón, to Pregones/PRTT on June 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. The theater is located at 575 Walton Avenue in the South Bronx. The reading is directed by Rudi Goblen, and admission is free.



THE WAR I KNOW follows a Bronx family during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s. The story is told through Eggie, a young gay Latino boy searching for his place in the world. The play explores themes of family, identity, resilience, and the impact of a public health crisis on a community.


The play was the inaugural recipient of the Write It Out Prize, sponsored by GLAAD, and has previously been developed with artists including Robin de Jesús, Kara Young, and Wilson Cruz.

The Egg & Spoon Theater Collective has been developing new plays and community programming around New York City since 2017.


These upcoming readings are part of Incubate NYC, a play-development program that Egg & Spoon started in 2021. The idea is to support playwrights of color from the outer boroughs and help bring their stories to a wider audience.


Playwrights from the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn have all taken part in Incubate NYC. The program offers workshops, public readings, and support to help new plays get closer to a full production.



"INCUBATE NYC is built on a simple idea: the stories born in New York's neighborhoods deserve to be developed and experienced in those communities first," said Liam Lonegan, Artistic Director at Egg & Spoon. "Dominic's THE WAR I KNOW is a perfect example of the kind of work we're proud to champion—a moving, deeply personal story that preserves an important chapter of Bronx history while speaking to audiences today."


Alongside the readings, Egg & Spoon is teaming up with LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, HIV/AIDS organizations, and local Bronx community groups that share the themes of the play.


Pregones/PRTT operates theater spaces in the Bronx and Manhattan and is known for developing original productions rooted in Puerto Rican and Latinx cultural experiences. The organization also partners with artists and community groups to present theater, music, and multidisciplinary performances throughout New York City.
