The Rip is a new Netflix crime thriller that puts Matt Damon and Ben Affleck back on screen together, this time as Miami police officers caught in a high pressure situation that turns routine procedure into a test of loyalty. The film premieres Thursday, January 16, streaming on Netflix, and centers on what happens when a team of cops is forced to stay put after uncovering millions in cash during a drug bust.
Damon and Affleck play partners on a Miami tactical narcotics unit after their team uncovers a massive cash stash inside a derelict safehouse. Damon appears as Lieutenant Dane Dumars, newly promoted and now responsible for keeping order, while Affleck plays Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne, a longtime partner suddenly forced to navigate a shift in authority.
By law, the officers must count the seized money on site before leaving, a decision that keeps them confined as word of the seizure spreads and outside threats begin to close in. As the hours stretch on, the night becomes less about procedure and more about survival, with pressure mounting and personal tensions pushing the team toward the breaking point.

“Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds,” Carnahan tells Tudum. “I've never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way.”
The film is written and directed by Joe Carnahan, a filmmaker often associated with grounded action stories that place character under pressure. Here, the setup is simple but loaded. A confined location. A ticking clock. A group of people meant to trust one another, now questioning every motive. As the cash pile grows, the strain inside the room builds.

“In Miami, you have to count the money on site, so that everybody knows how much is there. They know that it’s almost certainly cartel money that belongs to very dangerous people who are probably going to come get it. They’re on the clock, and they have to start thinking of defending where they are because they can’t just leave.”

For Affleck, the story hinges on temptation and uncertainty rather than spectacle. The danger is not only who is outside the house, but who might crack inside it.
“It begs the question: What do you do when faced with this massive temptation? What does that mean? What’s it like to see that up close? And then also, who do you trust?”

The Rip is produced by Artists Equity, the studio founded by Damon and Affleck.

For viewers who like crime stories that build slowly and then tighten the screws, The Rip is shaping up to be one of those films where the situation is just as compelling as the action that follows.
