A new slasher is heading to theaters this summer. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, opens in U.S. theaters on August 7, with distribution from MUBI. The film stars Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson and marks Schoenbrun’s third feature following the breakout success of I Saw the TV Glow.

While the initial announcement arrived earlier this year, the August release date places the film squarely in late-summer horror season, a strategic window for audiences ready for something stranger than a traditional franchise sequel.

The story centers on a long-running fictional horror franchise, “Camp Miasma,” which has faded after years of uneven sequels. A young queer director is hired to revive it. Her plan? Cast the original film’s now-reclusive “final girl.”

What begins as a nostalgic reboot quickly spirals into something more unsettling. The relationship between the two women unravels into psychological obsession, blurred identity, and escalating violence. The premise positions the film as both a slasher revival and a commentary on franchise culture, fandom, and authorship.

A cinematic and atmospheric wide shot from "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma." In the center of a dark, misty body of water, a single hand reaches upward, clutching a tall wooden spear that breaks the surface. The background is filled with thick, blue-grey fog, and the water’s surface reflects the moody, dim light.

The ensemble cast includes Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Sarah Sherman, Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Quintessa Swindell, Kevin McDonald, and Jack Haven.

Schoenbrun’s previous feature, I Saw the TV Glow, premiered at Sundance in 2024 and later screened at Berlinale, San Sebastián, and SXSW, earning multiple Independent Spirit Award nominations. That film blended suburban dread with media obsession and queer identity, themes that appear to echo again in Camp Miasma.

Before that, Schoenbrun directed We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, a quiet but disturbing portrait of online horror culture. With Camp Miasma, the filmmaker moves from intimate digital unease into a more overt genre frame.

MUBI financed the film and will distribute it in North America, Latin America, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Benelux, Spain, Italy, Turkey, India, Australia, and New Zealand. The Match Factory is handling additional worldwide sales. The film is produced by Plan B Entertainment.
