The new NBC comedy Stumble premiered on Friday, November 7, and is starting off strong with a first episode that’s funny, fast-moving, and full of heart. It’s the kind of show that makes you laugh one minute and root for the characters the next.

(Episodes stream the next day on Peacock.)

The story follows Coach Courteney Potter, played by Jenn Lyon, a once-decorated cheer coach who's tied for the winningest record in college cheer history. After being fired for partying a little too hard with her championship squad, she's forced to rebuild her career at a much smaller junior college. What she finds there is a team of lovable misfits who may not have perfect form but have plenty of spirit.

Lyon and Taran Killam, who plays her supportive husband Boone, make a hilarious pair. Their chemistry gives the show a warm energy, and the entire cast shines around them. The cheer routines look great too, thanks in part to real-life Cheer coach Monica Aldama, who serves as an executive producer and helps bring real competitive authenticity to the show.

Among the standout performers are Anissa Borrego as Krystal, an experienced cheerleader and gymnast, and Arianna Davis as Madonna, who joined the show because she's a big fan of mockumentaries like The Office. Kristin Chenoweth also steals the spotlight in a couple of scenes as Tammy Istiny, Courteney's former assistant turned rival. Meeting Tammy is easily one of the funniest moments of the premiere.

The humor comes from the offbeat personalities and clever writing, but the show also respects the real athleticism and teamwork behind cheerleading. And at the heart of it all is Coach Potter's personal motto: "I can. I will. I must."

Stumble delivers the right mix of laughs and underdog energy, setting up what could become one of NBC’s most enjoyable new comedies.

TalkTeaV Recommends: Stumble- a spirited comedy that sticks the landing. Warning: may cause a spit-take reaction.
