A new Netflix documentary is making waves — and it isn’t afraid to get deep. Shark Whisperer premieres June 30 on Netflix, diving straight into the controversy surrounding viral marine conservationist Ocean Ramsey. The 90-minute film, from My Octopus Teacher director James Reed, blends breathtaking underwater cinematography with a close-up look at the intersection of science, social media, and shark storytelling.
At the center of the documentary is Ramsey, known for her jaw-dropping videos of swimming cage-free with tiger sharks and great whites. To some, she’s a fearless advocate working to humanize one of the ocean’s most misunderstood predators. To others, she’s a social media personality whose actions put both sharks and people at risk—all under the banner of conservation.
This film looks at both points of view. Co-directed by Reed, J.P. Stiles, and Harrison Macks, Shark Whisperer puts Ramsey’s work under the microscope. It questions whether going viral for hugging sharks helps or hurts the broader conservation effort, and it asks: What’s the cost of turning advocacy into a personal brand?
