François Civil and Kit Harington star in the MGM+ and BBC drama adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities.
First look images from A Tale of Two Cities offer an early glimpse at MGM+ and the BBC’s upcoming four-part drama, bringing Charles Dickens’ novel to television with a new cast and scope.
The limited series stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), François Civil (The Three Musketeers), and Mirren Mack (Miss Austen). The series will air on MGM+ in the United States and the BBC in the United Kingdom, though an exact premiere date has not yet been announced.
Set in London in 1782 during rising tensions between France and Britain, the story follows Lucie Manette (Mack), whose life changes when she learns her father, long believed dead, may still be alive in Paris. Her search begins when Charles Darnay (Civil), a French emigré, is arrested for treason.
Lucie turns to Sydney Carton (Harington), a sharp but troubled lawyer, to help free him. What follows is a complicated relationship between three people pulled together by love, duty, and circumstance.

The series builds toward a love triangle between two men who share a striking resemblance but differ in character. As their lives intertwine, the story moves across countries and conflicts, touching on themes of identity, sacrifice, and revolution.
Filming took place in Budapest, Hungary, with the production aiming to capture the scale and atmosphere of late 18th-century Europe. The project comes from writer Daniel West (Top Boy), who also serves as an executive producer alongside Harington. Richard Clark (Outlander) directs the series.
Harington, widely recognized for playing Jon Snow, returns to a period setting here, while Civil continues to build on his film work in European cinema. Mack, who recently appeared in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, takes on the central role that anchors the story.
No premiere date has been announced yet for either MGM+ or the BBC.
