Before John Stewart could wear a Green Lantern ring, nearly every part of his life had been shaped around earning one. HBO’s Lanterns gives the DC hero an origin story that helps explain how he becomes one of DC’s most prominent Black superheroes. It reveals what Stewart sacrificed while connecting his isolated childhood, military precision, and architectural mind.
Aaron Pierre plays John, a former Marine sniper and architect recruited as Hal Jordan’s possible successor. Lanterns premiered Aug. 16, 2026, on HBO Max. The eight-episode season follows John and Hal as a murder investigation in Rushville, Nebraska, points toward a larger cosmic threat. The series combines established parts of John’s DC history with new details created for his television origin.

Why Was John Stewart Chosen?

John’s path begins with his father, John Stewart Sr., who was considered for Abin Sur’s ring before it selected Hal Jordan. Stewart Sr admitted that he was afraid because he feared leaving his family. The Guardian Lianna only understood his answer after John's mother, Bernadette Stewart, explained how race, culture, and a Black father’s responsibilities shaped that fear.
The encounter damaged Stewart Sr.’s mental health. Lianna offered the family a diamond as compensation and suggested that their infant son might one day receive his father’s opportunity. Bernadette negotiated for John’s chance, and his parents began preparing him through rigorous training.
John grew up isolated from his older brothers and believing neighborhood birds were scouts for the Guardians of Oa. During one test, Bernadette ordered him to shoot an apple from his father’s head while a bird watched. John was too afraid to fire.
Bernadette then confessed that the birds were never watching for the Guardians. She told John that becoming a Green Lantern had to be his decision, not something he pursued because he felt observed. John chose to repeat the test with Bernadette as the target and made the shot safely. As she tells him, “Courage is fear that’s said its prayers, son.”
Why Did the Guardian Lianna Interview John?

Lianna broke Green Lantern tradition by interviewing John personally instead of allowing a ring to choose him. Although John and his parents believed the Guardians had stopped monitoring him, episode 3 suggests that the Guardians quietly followed his progress.
She offers two reasons for the unusual selection. The first is the harm caused to John’s father after the ring found him. The greater concern is that Sinestro, a former Green Lantern who mentored Hal, betrayed the Corps and killed a Guardian. That history led the Guardians to be more selective and careful when selecting who would wear the ring.
What Happened in the Marines?

John joined the Marines to pay for college, becoming a Sergeant Major and elite sniper.
Stewart spent nine months in the Chechen mountains tracking Arkady Petrov, known as the Grey Wolf. Just as John prepared to take a clean shot, Hal Jordan, ignoring orders against interfering in Earth’s affairs, seized Petrov and exposed the U.S. secret operation.
Because the government was not supposed to be conducting the mission, John was told someone needed to take the blame. He was stripped of his rank and dishonorably discharged.
John was later assigned to train under the Green Lantern whose reckless intervention had destroyed his military career. That history explains why he can respect Hal’s abilities while resenting his behavior and authority.

The 70s Green Lantern issue 87 established John as an architect, activist, marine, and Hal’s alternate. The Lantern series expands that origin through his family and military service.
