March brings a full calendar of performances to the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture as the venue marks Women’s History Month with music, theater, ballet, puppetry, and history-based storytelling. The events run throughout the month at the center’s campus on the grounds of Hostos Community College, offering several free programs and low-cost performances for Bronx audiences.

While the first event earlier in March has already taken place, there is still plenty to see this month. The series opens Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. with a performance by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The concert featured a wind quintet composed of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn, joined by piano as part of the Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel Community Concert series.

On Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m., the theater production Layer the Walls Midcentury takes the stage for a single performance. The show blends puppetry, masks, and live acting to tell intersecting stories of Jewish and Chinese immigrants and Puerto Rican migrants in New York City. Tickets start at $10, with discounted options for seniors, groups, and children.

The schedule continues with Los Soles Truncos (The Fanlights), a Spanish-language drama presented with English surtitles. The play follows three orphaned sisters struggling to preserve their family legacy inside a deteriorating mansion. Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. and Thursday, March 19, at 2:30 p.m., with tickets ranging from $7 to $15 depending on the performance.

Families will also find a free afternoon of ballet on Saturday, March 28, at 2 p.m., when students from the School of American Ballet present excerpts from classical works such as The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. The program also includes a behind-the-scenes look at how young dancers train in ballet. Admission is free with RSVP and recommended for audiences ages four and older.

The month concludes on March 31 with Unbowed and Unbossed: The Shirley Chisholm Story, written and performed by Ingrid Griffith. The production tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, who also became the first Black woman to run for president. Two performances are scheduled that day at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Together, the events offer Bronx audiences a mix of music, history, and theater while highlighting stories of resilience and cultural heritage during Women’s History Month.
