Harvey Stein, a New York–based photographer with more than 50 years behind the lens, will visit the Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) on Tuesday, October 7, at 6:30 p.m. for a free public talk. The event at 614 Courtlandt Avenue will focus on how Stein built a career through long-term projects and the challenges of staying creative over decades.

Stein first gained attention in the 1970s when a chance encounter with several sets of twins inspired him to begin photographing them on the streets of New York. That project grew into Parallels: A Look at Twins, his first photobook published in 1978, which went on to sell thousands of copies. Since then, he has produced 10 books, exhibited his work in nearly 100 solo shows, and built a reputation for documenting people and places with a patient, steady eye.

His process remains rooted in film. In a Texas Photographic Society Member Spotlight published in September 2020, Stein explained why he continues to shoot, develop, and print his work himself. “I don’t trust anyone else,” he said. “I want to have control over the process. It is exhausting... but it’s a good day when I am realizing my vision in the form of prints.”

The evening will include a slideshow and an open Q&A, giving visitors a chance to hear directly from Stein about his approach. Books will also be available for purchase and signing.

Beyond his own work, Stein has been an influential teacher at the International Center of Photography and the Los Angeles Center of Photography. He has also curated dozens of exhibitions and served as director of photography at Umbrella Arts, a gallery in the East Village. His most recent book, Coney Island People 50 Years, was published in 2022.

The Bronx Documentary Center is a nonprofit gallery founded by former New York Times photographer Michael Kamber. Known for exhibitions that use photography and film to spark social change, the BDC offers free admission with gallery hours Thursday–Friday, 3–7 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday, 1–5 p.m. Current exhibits include Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW), details featured in TalkTeaV’s recent coverage.

The center will also host the opening reception for Foto Féminas: 10-Year Anniversary on Friday, Oct. 3, from 6–9 p.m. at the BDC Annex, 364 E. 151st Street.

For Bronx audiences, the event is an opportunity to connect with one of New York’s most experienced photographers and to hear how a career in art can be built not from quick projects but from a lifelong commitment to storytelling through images.
