Expedition Unknown returns with a new episode on Wednesday, December 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery as Josh Gates heads to the Oregon coast for a real-life Goonies treasure hunt tied to the film’s 40th anniversary. Gates travels to Neahkahnie Mountain, a rugged stretch of shoreline in Tillamook County, where he looks into reports of a wrecked Spanish galleon and a long-running local legend about buried treasure.
Gates starts the episode on the same shoreline viewers saw in the original movie. “I’m on the Oregon coast. The setting for the greatest movie ever,” he says in the trailer.
The team finds pieces of a Spanish ship that sank in 1694, and the episode includes details about the wooden beam discovered by local resident Craig Andes that some believe could be connected to the wreck. Gates says that if the cargo survived, “it’s safe to say the ship’s cargo would be worth millions.”
The investigation ties directly to the story that inspired the film. The Goonies follows a group of kids from Astoria who search for pirate treasure to save their homes, a plot rooted in Oregon folklore about lost gold and early treasure hunters.

“These were the Goonies before the Goonies,” Gates said, pointing to decades of told stories about treasure hunters searching the mountain’s trails for signs of buried artifacts.
This episode is part of a season that follows Gates as he investigates a stagecoach heist, a missing World War II submarine in the Baltic Sea, and Cornelius Vanderbilt’s lost steamship in Nicaragua. The Oregon search stands out because it connects to a movie that still means a lot to fans, especially in the Pacific Northwest.
