Disney+ Iwájú: A Futuristic Animated Series From Pan-African Media Company Kugali
The eagerly anticipated animated television series Iwájú, co-produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and the Pan-African Comic Book Entertainment Company Kugali, is scheduled to debut on February 28, 2024, exclusively on the Disney+ streaming platform.
Set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, Iwájú is a coming-of-age story that follows Tola (Simisola Gbadamosi), a young girl from a wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole (Siji Soetan), a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.
Produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson, Iwájú also features the voices of Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, and Weruche Opia.
Inspired by the vibrant spirit of Lagos, Iwájú was written and directed by Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, with production designed by Hamid Ibrahim and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku, who are all part of the Kugali filmmaking team.
The music for the series has an authentic African influence composed by Ré Olunuga, a renowned Nigerian composer who has also worked on music for the BBC film Girl and the upcoming Disney+ original movie Rise.
In addition, a new mobile game, Disney Iwájú: Rising Chef, will take players into the world of Iwájú and allow them to explore authentic African delicacies through a fast-paced and accessible cooking game that celebrates the culture. The game will be available on iOS and Android platforms on February 28, 2024.
