Bronx residents will have two chances to welcome the season with poetry and storytelling as events led by Scarlet Gomez, founder of Poetry House, bring writers and neighbors together at historic sites across the Bronx.

The first, 'Ask Virginia,' takes place Saturday, March 28, with doors opening at 4 p.m. at Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, 2640 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10458. A second event, 'The World in the Archive,' follows on Wednesday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. at The Bronx Historical Society Research Center, 3313 Bainbridge Ave., Bronx, NY 10467.

'Ask Virginia' is designed as a creative space and open mic centered on lived experiences that are often overlooked. Built around the theme “To be known is to be loved,” the gathering invites participants to reflect on personal histories and share their work in a supportive setting. The program begins with a community talkback, followed by opening the floor to poets, writers, and spoken word artists.

Our stories are complex, brilliant, political, funny, painful, magical, and they deserve a home that reflects that.” Read: Bloody, Beautiful, and Ours, Rafiana Martinez and the Vision for Borí Books & Café.  Martinez shares why the Harlem-based literary project exists and who it is being built for.

Attendance is limited to 20 people, and organizers recommend registering in advance to secure a spot. The event is open to all and aims to create a space where community voices can be heard and valued.

A few days later, Gomez will lead 'The World in the Archive,' an in-person writing workshop focused on world-building. The session encourages participants to draw on personal and community archives as they develop new ideas. Writers will also look to the work of authors Octavia Butler and Ursula K. Le Guin as reference points during the workshop.

The April 1 session is geared toward writers at the early stages of a project, offering a structured environment to shape ideas and expand creative practice. Registration is required.

Gomez, who is facilitating both events, brings experience as a published writer and workshop leader, helping guide participants through both reflection and craft. Across both programs, the focus remains on building connections through storytelling while giving local voices a place to grow.

Together, these events offer a simple invitation as spring begins in the Bronx: gather, write, and be heard.
