The Bronx County Historical Society and its partner organizations are diving into summer with two dynamic events that celebrate the borough’s culture through dance, photography, street art, and sound. These aren't just museum moments. They’re living reminders of what makes the Bronx one of the most creative, resilient, and community-rooted places in the world.

This Sunday, June 15 from 1 to 3 p.m., Orchard Beach gets even more alive with the opening celebration of Bronx photojournalist Ricky Flores’s new outdoor installation. It’s a powerful photo essay of summer life and dance culture, held at Section 4 during the 1980s.

Flores’s black-and-white images capture the electric circles of Salsa, Disco, Up Rock, and Floor Work that helped shape Breaking into a global art form. This part of the beach was especially popular among Puerto Rican families, with dance battles just steps apart and music spilling into the summer air. Flores, who began documenting life in the South Bronx in 1979, brings authenticity and heart to every frame.

The exhibit, presented in collaboration with From The Bronx, The Bronx Beer Hall, BronxDNA, and Culture Crush, is part of the 2025 Photoville Festival and will remain on view throughout the summer. If you’re headed to Salsa Sundays, just follow the music. You’ll find the installation in Orchard Beach, Section 4, right near the park drive.

Then on Thursday, June 19 at 2:00 p.m., the celebration continues at the Museum of Bronx History with the Third Annual Aerosol Art and Street Jam. This year’s theme is Juneteenth Jamboree, Graff Meets Hardcore.

The event brings together street art legends and rising voices with live painting by names like STAFF 161, WEN COD, COMET, and young artists from Bronx high schools. Bronx Poet Laureate Kay Poema will lead poetry, while music comes courtesy of DJ Eddie Nocentelli of Rebelmatic. He’s one of several artists featured in the museum’s Uptown Rumble: Heavy Music in The Bronx exhibit.

The day also includes food from Johnson’s BBQ, live printing by From The Bronx, drinks from The Bronx Beer Hall, and free tours of the exhibit. Held at 3266 Bainbridge Avenue, this street jam is a true mix of past and present. The event is made possible with support from New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera and the NYC Council’s Art as Catalyst for Change initiative.

Keep an Eye on the Bronx County Historical Society

BCHS continues to show that history isn’t just preserved. It’s alive, shared, and reimagined. I love writing about what the Society has going on, but just in case I missed anything, check out their latest events and exhibits at bronxhistoricalsociety.org.
