The 2024 drama Apples Never Fall brought Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel to television with a star-studded cast led by Annette Bening and Sam Neill. It's a family mystery with a simple question: how well do we really know the people closest to us? The seven-episode miniseries premiered on March 14, 2024, and is currently streaming on Peacock.
At the center of the story are Stan and Joy Delaney, former tennis coaches who sold their academy and looked forward to retirement. Their adult children, Amy, Troy, Logan, and Brooke, soon face an unsettling reality when a mysterious young woman shows up at their parents’ door.
When Joy disappears without a trace, suspicions rise, secrets unravel, and the family must confront what they thought they knew about one another.

Who’s in It?
Annette Bening stars as Joy, with Sam Neill as her husband, Stan. Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and Essie Randles play the children. Georgia Flood appears as Savannah, a mysterious guest in the family’s home. Other cast members include Jeanine Serralles and Dylan Thuraisingham as detectives on the case, plus guest stars Katrina Lenk, Nate Mann, and Quentin Plair.
"It was thrilling to write about the truly grown-up issues the Delaneys are grappling with, like the sometimes brutal sacrifices parents make to keep a marriage and family together. We also take the gloves off when capturing what it takes to be a working mother and wife as we follow Joy into the mystery at the heart of this show," said Showrunner and Executive Producer Melanie Marnich (The Big C, The Affair).
David Heyman (Wonka, Barbie) executive-produced alongside Moriarty, Bening, and others. Chris Sweeney directed multiple episodes, with Dawn Shadforth handling the middle arc. Filming took place in Australia and Florida.

How Did Critics Respond?
The miniseries drew mixed but thoughtful reviews. Cristina Escobar at RogerEbert.com wrote, “The cast does the work to make this tension relatable and fraught.” Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter stated on Rotten Tomatoes, "Despite its shortcomings as a mystery or a character study, the drama succeeds as a reminder to show our families some grace."

Why It Stands Out
Apples Never Fall fits squarely into Moriarty’s pattern of blending domestic drama with mystery, echoing the tone of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers.
With Bening and Neill at the forefront, the miniseries gave audiences a mix of prestige casting and family-driven suspense. While critics debated its depth, the series stands as another entry in the trend of adapting Moriarty’s novels into TV events.

David Heyman said, "Apples Never Fall is Liane Moriarty at her very best, and I am immensely grateful and proud that she has given me the opportunity to bring it to the screen."
