Whistle, a new teen horror movie from The Nun director Corin Hardy, is officially coming to U.S. theaters. IFC and Shudder picked up the rights following IFC Entertainment Group’s breakout success with Clown in a Cornfield, which surpassed their 2024 box office record previously set by Late Night with the Devil. Riding that momentum, Whistle is now slated for a wide theatrical release.
Based on a short story by screenwriter Owen Egerton, Whistle follows a group of high school misfits who discover a cursed Aztec Death Whistle. Once blown, the artifact unleashes a horrifying fate, summoning their own deaths to hunt them down one by one. As the body count climbs, the teens scramble to uncover the whistle's origins and reverse the deadly curse they've triggered. Blending ancient curses with modern high school terror, Whistle adds a unique twist to the horror lineup.
While the film leans into supernatural scares, the object at its center is rooted in real history. The Aztec "death whistle," known as Ehecachichtli, was a ritual instrument believed to be used in ceremonies tied to death, sacrifice, and the underworld. Designed to produce a chilling, scream-like sound, its purpose remains partly mysterious, adding to the film's eerie edge.

The film stars Dafne Keen (Logan), Sophie Nélisse (Yellowjackets), Sky Yang (Rebel Moon), Percy Hynes White (My Old Ass), and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead). Director Corin Hardy says the film channels the "heart-on-sleeve, disenfranchised-teen-spirit" of genre classics, while also tapping into the unique mythology of the real-life Death Whistle.
"I was drawn to the mysterious mythology surrounding the 'Death Whistle' and how it presented me with the opportunity to create a variety of cinematic, imaginative, and terrifying deaths," said Hardy. "This film is built for the big screen experience, so I can't wait for audiences to blow the Whistle with Independent Film Company and Shudder in cinemas!"
