Sunny: Rashida Jones Stars in Apple TV+'s Dark Comedy Mystery Thriller: Sets July Premiere

Apple TV+ has been making waves with its innovative content, and this summer, the streamer is diving back into the mystery thriller genre with 'Sunny,' a new series created by Katie Robbins (The Affair) and director Lucy Tcherniak (Station Eleven).
The dark comedy series comprises 10 episodes, each lasting half an hour. Rashida Jones from Parks and Recreation stars in the lead role and also serves as an executive producer. The initial two episodes are scheduled for release on July 10, 2024.

Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, sees her life shattered when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As a form of consolation, she receives Sunny, a domestic robot created by her husband’s electronics company. Initially, Suzie resents Sunny, but they gradually form an unexpected friendship that leads them to uncover the dark truth behind her family's disappearance. With Sunny by her side, Suzie becomes dangerously enmeshed in a world she never knew existed.

Along with Jones, the series also stars Hidetoshi Nishijima (Sayonara, Maestro) as Masa Sakamoto, Joanna Sotomura (Barry) as Sunny, Judy Ongg (Money Wars) as Noriko Sakamoto, You (Nobody Knows) as Hime, singer/songwriter Annie the Clumsy (Ane No Koe) as Mixxy, and Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill) as Yuki Tanaka.
Produced by A24, the series is based on the book 'The Dark Manual' by award-winning Irish writer Colin O’Sullivan, who resides in Japan. Robbins and Jones executive produce alongside A24, marking the second collaboration for Apple TV+, A24, and Jones after the success of Sofia Coppola’s film 'On the Rocks.' Jones also recently appeared in the global hit series 'Silo,' further cementing her strong relationship with Apple TV+.
