The Bronx County Historical Society is inviting residents to join two upcoming sessions of its South Bronx History Keepers program, a free public series designed to celebrate and document the stories of Mott Haven. The next events, Storytelling Night on Tuesday, November 18, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and Oral History Night on Tuesday, December 9, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., will take place at the NYPL Mott Haven Library, 321 E. 140th Street, offering a space for residents to share personal memories and learn the basics of oral history preservation.
The South Bronx History Keepers program builds on the success of the Mott Haven Oral History Project, which has spent recent years gathering firsthand accounts of life in the South Bronx. The initiative connects local 'history keepers,' residents who collect photographs, music, and memories, with institutions like the Bronx County Historical Society for training, archiving, and community engagement.
“Are you a lover of your neighborhood's history?” the group asks in its public invitation. “Do you find yourself collecting stories, vinyl records, photographs, or other old items in your spare time? If so, join The Bronx County Historical Society for Fall sessions of South Bronx History Keepers, a free public program designed to support new and ongoing work of local history keepers in the South Bronx.”
Earlier sessions this fall featured multimedia presentations by members of the Mott Haven History Keepers team who discussed why preserving neighborhood stories matters. Participants also shared historic artifacts in a “show and tell” event, linking family keepsakes and local history in new ways.

These gatherings have grown out of a larger community effort to strengthen cultural resilience in the Bronx. Through that support, the Mott Haven Oral History Project established an archival partnership with the Bronx County Historical Society, ensuring that recorded interviews and community stories will be preserved and made available for future researchers.
Stories from the project have already reached beyond the borough, including in the Museum of the City of New York’s 2023 exhibit “New York Now: Home.” Other collaborations, like the Stories of Activism Project funded by the Bronx Council on the Arts, continue to show how neighborhood voices can shape both art and scholarship.
Each new History Keepers session is part of a growing movement that turns everyday memories into living history. For many Bronx residents, it is a reminder that preserving the past is not just about archives but about listening to each other.
For anyone who loves a good story or finds themselves tuning into the History Channel, the South Bronx History Keepers offer something even better: the chance to hear history told right from the source.
