South Bronx History Keepers Ask Residents to Share What Has Changed

Later sessions focus on family food traditions and lost neighborhood landmarks.
Recognizing a familiar corner in an old photograph is part of the assignment at the next South Bronx History Keepers gathering. The Bronx County Historical Society will host The Bronx Before & After:
Photo Match Night on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at Mott Haven Library, 321 E. 140th St. The free workshop invites residents to match older photographs with present-day views and discuss how their neighborhoods have changed. Event details
Participants will help identify locations, share memories connected to the pictures, and consider what shaped the changes they see. Recognizing the site is a starting point. The conversation also makes room for what residents remember about being there.

The remaining fall sessions offer other ways into that discussion, with family meals and vanished gathering places taking their turns as subjects.
Kitchen Table Histories, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, invites participants to share a favorite recipe, family tradition, or food memory. Topics include migration, holidays, and neighborhood restaurants, connecting the food Bronx families remember with the stories behind it. The free session runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the same library. November event details
On Tuesday, Dec. 1, Lost Landmarks & Community Story Circle will focus on places that have disappeared, including businesses, movie theaters, community gardens and gathering spaces. Scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m., the season’s final session asks residents to recall why those places mattered and share stories prompted by the fall’s activities. Fall program schedule

The series opened with a Sept. 8 community mapping workshop. Its announced activity asked participants to place meaningful locations, from murals to former businesses, on a giant neighborhood map.
Together, the sessions give residents several starting points for sharing what they know: a street they recognize, a meal they remember, or a place they still miss.
