When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target.
Honestly, I thought the movie was just ok. I had fun watching it and never felt bored, but I think storywise there were a lot of issues that brought it down, then a reveal scene, which was genuinely terrible and the worst of the franchise.
It seems strange too to say about a movie that was nearly 2 hours long, but it felt too fast.
We never really got time to sit with anything that happened in the story before it was rushing off to the next part.
This meant we didn't really get to see much character development or how they feel from what's happening. I genuinely don't remember any characters' names other than Tatum.
But I feel most problems stem from the reveal at the end too. As usual with Scream, the reveals make us look back over the movie and give us context, but with this one, it genuinely makes no sense.
I will say, though, I did enjoy the Sidney as a mother storyline. As we see, rather than Tatum being a mini Sidney, the movie goes the other way with it. Tatum feels timid and shy because of Sidney's overprotectiveness and not letting her make her own mistakes.
I enjoyed how it incorporated AI fears too, as we see videos of Stu Macher calling out Sidney and claiming to still be alive. But we, as the characters do, wonder, is this real, or is someone using AI to make it seem real? The conclusion of that storyline, however, is predictable and sours the whole film.
It honestly feels like, and I say this as a Scream fan and as someone who loves Sidney as the final girl, that there is really nowhere else to take Sidney's story. Everyone with a personal connection is long gone, so new Ghostfaces don't hit the same as those early franchise ones.
Standouts - Neve always delivers as Sidney and does a good job. I liked Isabel May as Tatum too. Her dynamic with Sidney was my favourite part of the film.
Bottom line, despite the lacklustre story and terrible reveal, I was entertained watching it. Seeing Sidney in this new light as a mother and trying to protect her daughter from her past trauma was really interesting.
Available in cinemas.
