Before Season 2 begins, here’s how High Potential left us guessing, and why the new cast hints at a more intense season.

ABC’s High Potential was a breakout hit, with more than 32 million viewers tuning in for the pilot and summer reruns averaging over 2 million per episode. The series returns for its second season Tuesday, September 16, at 10 p.m., and I’ll be watching again. While it’s technically a crime drama set in a big city, High Potential has that cozy-mystery vibe that makes you want to curl up for just one more episode.
I know I’ll get pushback for this, but I enjoyed High Potential and Matlock equally. When it comes to pilots, though, High Potential takes the win. For finales, Matlock’s two-part closer had the better hook.
Even so, High Potential wrapped its season with plenty of drama. The finale introduced a villain who rattled Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), reopened the mystery of her missing husband, and hinted at a possible spark between Morgan and Karadec. More than enough to keep viewers counting the days until the new season.

The season closed with three big twists. First, Morgan found a cryptic note from the Puzzle Maker: “You’re the one, Morgan. We shall play again. Me and you.” As a High-Potential Intellectual (HPI), she probably already suspects how that message landed in her grocery bags.
Meanwhile, Gio Conforth (Domenick Lombardozzi) thought Morgan would meet him at his hotel room, but Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) arrived instead, leaving Gio unsettled and frustrated. Later, Karadec revealed to Morgan that her ex-husband, Roman, is still alive. If the feds are connected, the mystery may stretch far beyond Morgan’s family.
Amid the chaos, Morgan’s personal life looks just as tangled. She and Tom (JD Pardo) seem to be getting closer, yet there’s also a hint of a will-they-won’t-they with Karadec. Personally, I don’t see him fitting into her family dynamic, but characters evolve as seasons progress. Between the possible return of Roman, a maybe-relationship with Tom, and baby daddy Ludo Radovic (Taran Killam), Karadec could be stepping into a complicated situation.

Adding to the excitement, Shameless alum Steve Howey joins the cast as a series regular, playing the precinct’s new captain, Jesse Wagner. ER favorite Mekhi Phifer is also coming aboard in a recurring role, though details about his character are still under wraps. With both actors known for thriving in long-running series and handling complex roles, the upcoming season could lean even more into drama and intensity.
As ABC describes it, the premiere wastes no time: Morgan works tirelessly to shield her family from the Game Maker’s threats, only to be pulled into another case that drags her back into his twisted game. The LAPD must decide whether to trust her instincts before the next move turns fatal.
If you're looking forward to season 2 and have some theories, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
