The enigmatic trench-coated figure, Sam Spade, has been an enduring symbol of the noir detective genre since his inception. He first appeared in Dashiell Hammett's 1930 novel The Maltese Falcon and has since become a symbol of the genre that has extended his legacy from literature to film and television. Spade is a private investigator known for his stoic demeanor, sharp intellect, and moral compass.
He first appeared on the big screen in the 1941 film adaptation of The Maltese Falcon, where Humphrey Bogart played the role, which propelled the character into cinematic stardom. Bogart's portrayal established Spade's status as the quintessential detective, and other actors such as Ricardo Cortez, Warren William, and even Peter Falk have played the role in different adaptations.
The neo-crime limited series Monsieur Spade will debut on Sunday, January 14, 2024. Clive Owen (Children of Men, The Knick) stars as the hard-boiled private detective in the six-episode drama from AMC, AMC+, and Acorn TV.
The year is 1963, and the legendary Detective Sam Spade (Owen) is enjoying his retirement in the South of France. By contrast to his days as a private eye in San Francisco, Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet. But the rumored return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered at the local convent. As the town grieves, secrets emerge, and new leads are established. Spade learns that the murders are somehow connected to a mysterious child who is believed to possess great powers.
