Join the Bronx County Historical Society (BCHS) and Broadway legend Charles Turner for a special dramatic reading that illuminates the untold stories of Black women domestic workers from the 1930s–1960s in The Bronx.
In an unmissable event marking both Black and Women’s History Months, veteran Broadway actor Charles Turner will present a dramatic reading of Voices From The Bronx Slave Market and Beyond, highlighting the often overlooked lives of Black women domestic workers in The Bronx during the 1930s through the 1960s.
Set for Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 3 pm, the event will take place at Vladeck Hall, located at the Amalgamated Housing Co-op, 74 Van Cortlandt Park South, The Bronx, NY.
This powerful reading draws from archival sources that highlight the grim reality of the so-called "Bronx Slave Market," where African-American women lined up in search of day labor. Turner, a seasoned Broadway actor, will bring their voices to life, shedding light on their struggles for dignity and better working conditions.
