A new scripted series is taking shape at Netflix, with Breakers officially announced as a drama led by Antony Starr. The series is now in production in Western Australia and marks the first Netflix show to shoot in that region. No release date has been confirmed, but the project is expected to arrive on the platform at a later time.

Breakers follows two best friends who head out on a backpacking trip across Australia. During their travels, they are pulled into what appears to be a tight-knit and ideal surfing community. Starr plays Brando, the leader of that group, described as both charismatic and mysterious. For now, Starr is the only cast member officially attached to the series.

The show comes from writer Pete Jackson, whose previous credits include The Death of Bunny Munro and Somewhere Boy. Direction duties are shared by Mary Nighy and Ng Choon Ping. The series is produced by BBC Studios’ Clerkenwell Films in partnership with BBC Studios Productions Australia, with a production team that includes Gavin O’Grady, Petra Fried, Wim De Greef, and Jackson.

Production support for Breakers is being provided by Screenwest and the Western Australian government through the Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive. Netflix noted that this backing helped bring the series to Western Australia, making it a first for the streaming service in that location.

Starr is also set to appear in the final season of The Boys on Prime Video later this year. He recently completed work on Samo Lives for NEON, where he portrays Andy Warhol, and has appeared in projects including Banshee and the action thriller G20 opposite Viola Davis.

Additional casting details and a premiere timeline for Breakers have not yet been announced.
