MGM+ and Carnival Films have revealed the next part of its hit historical drama, Belgravia: The Next Chapter. This continuation of the 2020 limited series, set in the affluent London district synonymous with 19th-century high society is set in 1871.
Developed and written by playwright and screenwriter Helen Edmundson, the series dives into the lives of the next generation of Belgravia's residents, interwoven with the return of familiar faces from the original. Spearheaded by executive producer Julian Fellowes, known for his work on Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age, the series premieres on January 14, 2024, on MGM+.
Three decades after the events depicted in the 2020 limited series, the story follows Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), the third Lord Trenchard, and his newfound love interest, Clara Dunn (Harriet Slater), a newcomer to London society. Unbeknownst to Frederick, his troubled past, stemming from an affair between his mother, Susan (Alice Eve), and the enigmatic John Bellasis (Adam James), adds complexity to his courtship and marriage to Clara.
"I'm so proud of everything this dedicated team accomplished with the original Belgravia series. I cannot wait for the world to return to Belgravia for this new iteration, expertly crafted by Helen Edmundson," said Executive Producer Julian Fellowes.
The star-studded cast includes Harriet Slater (Pennyworth) as Clara Trenchard, Benjamin Wainwright (World On Fire) as Frederick Trenchard, Edward Bluemel (Sex Education) as Dr. Stephen Ellerby, Toby Regbo (A Discovery of Witches) as Rev. James Trenchard, Hannah Onslow (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) as Emily Dunn, Sophie Thompson (Silo, Gosford Park) as Mrs. Dunn, Claude Perron (Working Girls) as The Marquise D’Etagnac, Sophie Winkleman (Two and a Half Men) as the Duchess of Rochester, and Elaine Cassidy (The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die) as Davison.
Notable returning actors are Alice Eve (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Susan Trenchard and Richard Goulding (The Windsors) as Oliver Trenchard.
Reuniting Carnival's award-winning creative team, led by Gareth Neame, along with executive producers Nigel Marchant, Julian Fellowes, and Joanna Strevens, the series promises to maintain the high standards set by the original.
Helen Edmundson serves as showrunner and executive producer, with direction by John Alexander, Paul Wilmshurst, Marisol Adler, and Roger Goldby. Colin Wratten, the producer of the original series, returns in the same capacity.
As an exciting bonus for fans, the original limited series, Belgravia, will be available for free on the MGM+ and participating partner platforms from December 31, 2023, to February 29, 2024, allowing audiences to catch up on the intricate tales of Belgravia before diving into the highly anticipated Belgravia: The Next Chapter.
